Why You Should Get Rid of Voles in Your Yard and Garden

Voles may look harmless, but these small rodents can cause significant damage to lawns, gardens, and landscaping. They feed on grass, plant roots, bulbs, and the bark of young trees and shrubs. Controlling vole activity early can help protect your property and prevent damage from getting worse.

1. Protect Your Lawn from Damage

Voles create narrow surface trails as they travel through grass and ground cover. Their feeding and tunneling can leave lawns patchy, damaged, and unattractive. Reducing vole activity helps protect healthy grass and maintain your yard's appearance.

2. Keep Your Garden and Plants Healthy

Voles feed on roots, bulbs, seeds, and other plant material. They can damage vegetable gardens, flower beds, and newly planted vegetation. Plants may wilt or die after their roots have been damaged. If a vole problem is not handled appropriately, gardens and lawns can be severely deteriorated, where even modern solutions and landscaping practices won't be able to save the vegetation.

3. Protect Trees and Landscaping

During winter and periods when other food is scarce, voles may chew bark near the base of young trees and shrubs. This damage can weaken or kill plants, and usually permanently stunts their growth, making vole control especially important around valuable landscaping.

4. Prevent Vole Problems from Growing

Voles reproduce quickly when conditions are favorable. Addressing signs of activity early can help limit further damage. Watch for narrow trails, small openings, gnawed plants, and damaged grass around garden edges and dense vegetation. Once signs of activity are present, start utilizing vole control systems.

5. Choose a Practical Vole Control Solution

When voles are damaging your property there are several methods to deal with them. Poisons and repellents can be used to deter voles from certain areas, however these are not generally the safest or cleanest approach and may not be effective. A physical trap used to catch or kill the voles is a more permanent solution, however no specific vole trap has been made until 2025. The Small Rodent Trap uses a spring loaded snare and easy to bend legs so that the trap can fit into a trail, or directly in front of a den and has proven to effectively catch voles.

Monitoring active areas and reducing dense ground cover can help protect your lawn and garden over time, but when activity start to rise, the most effective solution is to get rid of the voles. The most practical solution we have found is using traps that fit into the voles environment, such as the Small Rodent Trap.
